WHY FEMINISM? WHY NOW?:
AN INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL JUSTICE – AND WHY WE NEED IT

For Women's History Month, Melissa is offering a webinar to explore how the feminist movement presents itself today – unpacking widely misunderstood concepts – and why it's necessary to be involved. Often, when people stand against feminism, it’s because they’re simply not sure what the movement advocates for or what makes it relevant in 2018. This presentation – which uses grounded examples, lots of multimedia, and plenty of humor – is a fantastic introduction to what feminism means today, including explanations of concepts such as patriarchy, intersectionality, and privilege, that pushes the audience to the edge of their comfort zone while also holding space.

nightmare dressed like a daydream:
THE NORMALIZATION OF DATING VIOLENCE IN POP MUSIC

For Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Melissa is offering a webinar on an inextricably related topic: dating violence – and how our favorite bops often romanticize it. Listen closely to Top 40 radio, and what you find may surprise and disturb you. At every turn, we’re being inundated with messages and images that normalize unhealthy and abusive dating behaviors, from obsession and possessiveness to stalking. This interactive presentation gives an introduction to the dynamics of intimate partner violence and then uses pop culture – including an epic takedown (with love) of Taylor Swift – to highlight how ubiquitous harmful messages about sex and dating truly are.

AUDIENCE TESTIMONIALS

It wasn’t just Melissa’s style that blew me away — charismatic, witty, smart — but her sensitivity to the audience. She turned us into a community, and many left transformed.
She made dense and complicated academic theory and medical terminology accessible and enjoyable.
Fabello’s candid, “real” style made a large and intimidating auditorium seem small and intimate enough to have listeners engage with difficult subjects.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I ACCESS THE WEBINAR? Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, baby doll. Twenty-four hours before the scheduled event, you will be sent a link to the e-mail address you used to buy tickets. This link will bring you to a high-quality Zoom room, where you will find Melissa waiting for you. We would recommend downloading Zoom ahead of time, if you don't already have it installed. It's free! And you can find it here.

ARE REFUNDS AVAILABLE? You have up to one week (seven days) before the scheduled event to request a refund through EventBrite. Too late for that? That's okay! You can always transfer your ticket to someone else by simply forwarding them the link when you get it! What an amazing friend you are.

AM I JUST GOING TO BE TALKED AT? Hell no. Webinars have a reputation for being dry – an expert with lots of letters behind their name, rambling to you (uh, reading straight off the PowerPoint) in a monotone voice, putting you to sleep. That is not what this is about. This is a dynamic presentation, which means that you will be interacting with Melissa the whole time, through asking and answering questions. There will also be multimedia used – and plenty of corny jokes along the way.

WHAT IF I CAN'T ATTEND LIVE? If you're unable to attend live, but still buy a ticket, you will be sent a recording of the event. As such, this is accessible worldwide! You just need to let us know that you fall into that camp by contacting us.

ARE THE WEBINARS ACCESSIBLE FOR THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING COMMUNITY? Yup! The recordings of the events include professionally done captions.

I HAVE A QUESTION NOT ANSWERED HERE. No problem! You can use the contact form to send in your question.
